Architects and engineers may provide construction-phase services, but they are typically not responsible for construction means and methods, jobsite safety, or contractor workmanship unless the contract assigns those duties. Insurance is not a substitute for quality control, but it can be a critical part of financial protection. Coverage varies by carrier and policy, and exclusions and endorsements matter.

Architects and engineers’ professional liability insurance

Often called professional liability or errors and omissions (E&O), this coverage is designed to respond to claims alleging negligence in professional services such as design, specification, and construction administration, subject to policy terms and exclusions. Many policies are written on a claims-made basis, so maintaining continuous coverage and understanding retroactive dates and reporting requirements is important.

Contractors’ insurance, beyond the basics

General contractors commonly carry Commercial General Liability insurance, which is intended to cover third-party bodily injury and property damage claims.
