What to Know About the New iPhone X

Apple announced the latest iPhone models in early September, and not surprisingly, iPhone fans are excited. Though the iPhone 8 was also announced and just came out in late September, it seems most people are waiting for the iPhone X. So if you’re due for a new phone and want the latest option on the market, here’s what you need to know about the brand new iPhone X.

New Features

One of the top features that sets the iPhone X apart from previous models is that the screen is much larger. Granted, iPhone screens have been gradually increasing in size for the last few years, but with the iPhone X, the screen takes up the entire front panel. There’s not even room for the home button you’re used to seeing on the iPhone, so expect a big difference there. The screen is 5.8 inches in size. Compare this to the 4.7-inch screen on the iPhone 7, and the 5.5-inch screen on the iPhone 7 Plus.

The screen is not the only new feature people are talking about. There’s also Face ID, which you can use instead of a passcode or fingerprint to unlock the phone. All you have to do is look directly at the phone and it will unlock, making it pretty secure. It works by using a TrueDepth camera that maps your face in multiple places, so it’s unlikely that anyone else’s face—or even a picture of you—would work to unlock the phone.

Some other new features that are not on previous iPhone models include wireless charging and longer battery life. In fact, the iPhone X typically will last about two hours longer than the iPhone 7 Plus.

How Does the iPhone X Differ from the iPhone 8?

The iPhone 8 was just released, and though it’s also an upgrade from previous models, it does lack some of the features you can get with the iPhone X. For example, the iPhone 8 uses Touch ID, not Face ID, so you can continue to unlock your phone with your fingerprint rather than your face.

In addition, the iPhone 8 still has the home button, so the display doesn’t take up the entire front panel as it does with the iPhone X. The iPhone 8’s screen measures 4.7 inches, making it just over 1 inch smaller than the iPhone X. Also, the iPhone 8 won’t get the increased battery life of the iPhone X, nor will it feature portrait lighting, portrait mode on the front camera, or animojis.

You can start pre-ordering the iPhone X on October 27, and the first batch will ship on November 3. Expect some possible delays if you don’t pre-order it right away, since it’s likely to sell out fast. Also, the iPhone X is the most expensive one yet, starting at $999, or about $50 per month if you pay for it monthly through your cell phone service provider. So if you do buy this phone, make sure you get insurance to go with it if you want to properly safeguard your brand new electronic investment!
