You know, the kind of person who views risk the way a seasoned carpenter views a warped board.

Maybe you know the term “low-risk contractor.”

Maybe you wonder if that label was a compliment or some other insurance term. Or if it impacts how much you pay.

You’re not alone. In my work, it’s one of the most common questions I hear. It’s a good one.

Being viewed as lower risk could help you qualify for more favorable terms (or more carrier options), but pricing depends on your class codes, claims history, payroll, annual revenue, and underwriting rules.

It doesn’t mean no risk, of course. Construction will be one of the most hazardous undertakings. But some trades simply stack up far less frequently and with lower severity. Meaning the carrier expects lower frequency and/or severity on average, but individual loss experience still varies by contractor.

1. Handyman Services (Light-Duty)

Hold on, before all the handymen reading this get riled up. I get that the word “profession” can mean many things. Some handymen may work on riskier jobs.

I’m speaking about light-duty handyman jobs that involve small repairs.

Compared with many trades, handyman services are low-risk.

Not the large, high things that make risk-averse people queasy. Not the heavy machinery on construction sites.

Mounting TVs, hanging pictures, and basic drywall repair. That sort of thing.

Reasons why handyman services are low risk:

Quick jobs

Smaller tools

Not structural work

Usually on the ground

Less materials

2. Painting Contractors (Interior)

Painting. It’s the unsung hero of construction. It covers the sins of remodelers past, transforms spaces, and requires a steady hand.

Painters love to joke about the occasional spilled gallon and the universal struggle with ladder angles. Interior painting is often rated lower than exterior/high‑rise painting. But it still has meaningful exposures, especially when the ladder is used.

There was one time a painter I insured stepped backward into an open paint bucket. That was a mess. Funny even. But not a big claim.

Why they’re low risk:

Typically indoors

No heavy lifts.

No Power tools.

Property damage is unlikely.

Minimal risk to bystanders.

3. Flooring Installers (Non-Structural)

I’ve spent time on flooring job sites, and they’re more relaxed. Planks locking into place, the whir of a shop vacuum, maybe a saw buzzing in the background.

It could be considered higher risk than painting. Sure.

But there are no deafeningly loud machines. There’s very little working at height (I mean… it’s flooring), and it’s usually a neat work environment.

Reasons why they’re low risk:

The work is done on the ground.

Jobsites are kept tidy.

Less interaction with electricity.

Tools are light.

4. Window Cleaning (Ground-Level or One-Story)

Ground-level or one-story buildings are very rarely high-exposure for the insurance company.

Conditions are known and predictable. The workers are not that high off the ground. That translates to a lower risk.

Why they’re low risk:

No heavy equipment

Low risk of property damage

Shorter job cycles

5. Residential Cleaners / Janitorial Contractors

Cleaning is typically less severe than many construction trades, but exposures still include slip-and-fall incidents, chemical irritation/burns, and accidental property damage.

Residential cleaners work in closed environments with established routines.

It’s predictable work that needs attention, but not the type of high-risk exposure that some other industries face.

Why they’re low risk:

Soft materials

Non-destructive tools

Predictable work

No structural modification

Low equipment hazard

Remain a Low Risk Contractor

Being in a safer trade doesn’t mean you’re free of problems.

Here’s my best advice to you:

Keep the worksite clean.

Stay in touch with the customer.
